Oh..I know. It's been a really long time. I have a good excuse. Kind of. Well, not really. But we'll talk about that some other time. There have been, umm, things, going on. Life happens.

Amidst all that has been going on, we try to keep our humour intact. It's not that hard around here. Here are just a few things that I have caught myself saying in the past week:

Please get your fingers out of my hair. I know it's a special comb but it really hurts mommys head. Thank you.

Yes, I think Mickey does kiss Minnie. Yes, probably because he lubs her.

Just eat it please. No, it's not chicken. Yes, I know you like chicken best. This is not chicken. Now please eat it.

No, I don't think his balls were itchy. It's the way he dances. And why are you calling them balls?

Do I look like an idiot? (yes! I said that--and expected an answer????)

Why are you saying that? It's not very nice. No, brothers don't stink. Well Hannah was wrong.

Why are we talking about this? Oh. Well yes, they probably will be small. Good. I'm glad you are okay with that.

You will get your sticker when your room is clean. It is? Okay, well then lets go check. Oh. Okay. I'll stay here just one minute.

and the best....

No honey, you did not just crack your vagina. You were born that way. Yes. Now please stop crying.

Sorry it's been so long. Will try to stop by more often.

mmmmm...shortbreads

So, my friend Holly asked if I would share "my" shortbread recipe (hee hee..it's not really "mine"!!) and blog about it.

I oblige.. (in a hillbilly kind of way)

Put the butter in your mixer.
A whole pound.
(I can feel my hips growing as I write)

WHIP IT.
(I said whip it, whip it!) A LOT. Like, go and fold some laundry, check your facebook, pay some bills, call a friend kind of whip it.
(It needs to go from yellow to white)

Oh yeah. Preheat your oven. 325* (on mine)
Add in your cornstarch and icing sugar. And a pinch of salt. Mix those yummy dry ingredients in...
Mix in your flour one cup at a time. (That would make 3 times for anyone that isn't so great at math). Don't forget your vanilla.
Now, if you are ~~spoiled~~ blessed like I am, than take out your Wolfgang Puck Cookie Press. (If you aren't than you will need some kind of spoons or something). Put them evenly onto your cookie sheets.
Huh? Oh. Don't forget about tonights' supper. You might be very hungry while cooking the shortbreads--especially if you aren't allowed to eat them!!!
Put them in the oven. I'd say 12-15 minutes. But watch them. If they start to brown--get them out!!! They burn very easy!!
Watch out. They are very slippery. (don't let your child eat them off the floor either...unless of course they get to them before you do)
Pack them all up and give them away to your friends. (or eat them...but I guarantee one won't suffice, so you might be 'paying' for it come January --when you need new clothes and a treadmill!)

Whipped Shortbreads

1 pound butter

1 cup icing sugar

1/2 cup cornstarch

pinch salt

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon vanilla

For those who know me well, you will know that I don't handle mess very well. I can do dirt okay. But mess? Sends me over the top. I literally have a very hard time functioning in it. Stems back to somewhere in my lineage. (seriously!) That, coupled with a neat-freak mom, leads to a tad whacko ME!!

If I think back to my (really good!) childhood I can remember a very clean house. I remember Saturday mornings being allotted for cleaning and baking. I remember the living room being the "good" room that no one played in.

I also remember being the only kid to bring in super cool chocolates on a stick that my mom made!

I remember trading my homemade butter tarts for oreos. because everyone wanted my moms butter tarts.

I remember homemade 'professionally' decorated birthday cakes.

I remember swimming parties for my whole class with lots of homemade food.

And this is what I want my kids to remember. (among many things!!)

Yes, their mom was a tad neurotic.

And that: even

That having her kids bring in these for the funfair:

(Did I mention mens AND womens hockey won GOLD!!!!!!!!!)---Oh wait, I've just started.

Most of you know that we have just finished the 2010 olympics. In CANADA.

It has been posted and played practically everywhere, 24 hours of the day for the past 17 days. It would be hard not to notice.

For those 'die-hard' fans like myself, having the Olympic games hosted in my very own country was license to put my entire life on hold for 17 days.

Seriously.

There were day-long t.v. marathons followed by keep-your-eyes-open-with-toothpicks- (because it's 1:00 AM and you haven't been to bed before midnight in 12 nights and there are 5 nights to go).

I had bouts of depression followed by moments of joy.

I woke up my children by screaming at the t.v.

Oh yeah. I'm one of those.

And I enjoyed every.last.minute.

Having the games in Canada was exhilarating. The apparel for the games was for sale before Christmas, and by the time the games began, many of the stores were sold out. One day, while I was talking to my wonderful sister-in-law, I mentioned how I had been wearing "Canadian apparel" for years. She agreed.

I don't purchase clothes often. Actually, very, very seldom. In most cases my "new" clothes come on Christmas morning via my beloved husband.

There is one clause in that statement though.

I am a sucka for "Canada" wear.

And so, I give you, as many pictures as I can find, of me in my favourite clothing option!!

That is a "C". Promise. Oh how I miss this sweater.

Okay, so this one isn't quite as noticeable. That little white ring on my shorts is a symbol with a flag. The butt says...."Canada" (stumped ya eh?)

It's a sickness. I know. But I feel super blessed to live in a FREE COUNTRY: full of love, respect, friends and family.

You will all be quite bored by the end of all of these renovations. (or already are!!) We live, eat, sleep and breathe them right now, so you can imagine there is little else going on around here.

We purchased this house brand new almost 5 years ago. It is definitely a cookie cutter house, with builder supplied, basic, purchase-the-package-this-is-what-you-get kind of house. But we love it. Slowly, we have begun to make it our "home".

Those of you who have "built" a house, whether cookie cutter or custom, you know there are tons of little things you don't notice because of the wide arrange of decisions you need to make. There are some things that just slip through the cracks.

In our case, one of the things was our front entrance light.

Once we noticed what we were allotted with, we laughed until we cried. We thought it very funny that a company would build a brand new home and give it this itty bitty tiny light when you first walk in.

If you look very close. (click on pic) Take a peak at how ridiculous it actually is.

So, after 5 years of laughing and saying "we really need to change that thing". We did it.

And, obviously, our families motto is "Go big, or go home"!!

We are in full fledge renovation mode now. Yuck. You can imagine, as an organizing junkie and perfectionist freak, this stage does not sit well with me. To be honest, I don't even mind the dirt. I can handle that. Having 3 smaller children, you have to be able to handle dirt. (We all know that as soon as you wash the kitchen floor, someone spills orange juice.)

The disarray and chaos though...I am having a very difficult time with.

Like...the fact that my living room furniture is squeezed into my kitchen.

Or that my closet buckets and linen supplies are smushed up into the top of Aliahs closet.

That the rest of my closet contents lay strewn amongst my sheets and a pile of tools and who-knows-what-else!

That I have no railings going down and dirty plywood steps.

(He looks as about impressed as I am!!)

I wish it didn't bother me so much. I mean, I WAS the one asking for a change. And, in the end, it is going to be really.very.great! But now, while we live through it, I am having a ridiculously hard time.
Silly. I know.
One very late night this week, as my husband worked away at all the little, essential jobs, I aimlessly walked around wondering what I could do. I hate that feeling. I didn't know where to start, didn't have CONTROL of anything. (I have issues people, issues!!) So...I decided I would christen our subfloors.

When the kids woke up the next morning, and stood around reading all the magic marker scribbled across the entire floors, inquiring "why on earth would you colour all over the floor mom? " and " what does that say mom? What does persevere mean?"

my 2yo spoke up...
"Bad momma. Bad. Paper onwy. No cowor on fwoor. Paper onwy."

oh...we're here.

We've basically been doing just about anything you can think of.

Except blogging.

We've been ripping up carpet.

(THANK YA JESUS!!)

And cleaning REALLY. DIRTY. tops-of-cupboards.

Eew. Grosse.

Dealing with messy, disorganized closets.

And taking joy in the little things.

Like my favourite 2yo and 3 yo.

And brand new gifted appliances!!

And all the people that fill our lives with love.

Could someone please tell my first born to come home from Grandmas so I can get a picture of her?????!!!

So, that's how 2010 has been shaping up with us.

My son has recently informed me he would like to be a "picture man" when he grows up. "You know mom, the guy who takes pictures of things". Yeah bud, I know what a "picture man" is. I told him that that was a stellar idea, and I thought he'd be a wonderful photographer.

He proceeded to "show" me his talents whilst taking pictures of everything in sight.

Seriously.

Then he found the time delay button. Oh my. You can take a picture AND be in it yourself??

I think we've created a monster.

It's Christmas time.

How do I know?

Well...I have to spend my time shopping, wrapping, baking, decorating.

Which means some things just get neglected.

Okay. so not really.

You think I could function in this?

Dirty or dusty? Okay.

Messy? Nope.

On my day off one week I had to make 22 dozen shortbread. Yeah.

I babysat my niece, on top of my 3 kids. (well not exactly on top. She's little. That would hurt) She was here. So were my kids.

And, as you see, my house did not fair well.

Neither did I.

I ended the day by falling down the stairs, crushing about 1/2 of the shortbread.

Good times.

**btw** I can't blame the desk on the kids. It was me. ALLLLLLLL me.

So yeah.

It's Christmas.

Make it memorable.

We sure will.

We are very much alive and well....just trying to enjoy this season, "Jesus' birth" , while dealing with the hectic craziness of life. Hoping that each one of you are taking time out each day to enjoy this beautiful, hope-filled time of year.

We love (and I mean LOVE) Christmas time. Seriously brings JOY into our home and hearts.

It is a very difficult time of year for many though. I know people who dislike the 'season', some who get depressed, many who miss family members, or get super stresssed over finances (or lack therefore).

I get that. I understand.

However, we feel utterly blessed with all God has given us, and really try to enjoy this, the season of Christ's birth.

Yes, "this the season", as in NOW.

mmhmm.

NOW.

We put up our decorations early.

Having being raised by two totally different sets of parents, Mike and I came into the marriage with 2 very different views on, basically, everything. It has been a ton of fun compromising. One of the views we dealt with was Christmas. Mike won. (okay, didn't win). After having been through a few Christmases, and having children of our own, we came to the conclusion, that for us, this works.

Here is our reasoning:

We have a jam packed schedule, that only gets busier in November and December. My husband works shiftwork. That is very difficult on a family. Plus, Mike and I work exact OPPOSITE shifts. When we have a free evening we need to take advantage of it.

Decorating takes time and energy. If I want to spend an entire day decorating, I certainly don't want to take it all down in 2 weeks. I need to feel like I'm getting use of my talents.

I like to be organized. I do not like pressure. Having the part of the list done early means I can bake, shop, wrap @ leisure (early as well).

We all love the ambience of dark rooms with the Christmas tree lights on. It revokes 'good 'ole memories' in me. We are hoping to give the kids wonderful memories as well.

It changes the look of the house. Changes the internal feeling. Cozier, warmer, and a tad more peaceful. It's hard to explain, but the colour brings a tad more umm, colour, into our world.

Having things done early, gives us the chance to truly enjoy this time without the rush and frantic pace that can go along with Christmas.

It works for us. Well.

The great thing about marriage (or any relationship for that matter) is that we get to choose how to react to each others characteristics. For instance, a young lady fell head over heels with a guy whom she thought had the best sense of humour ever. He made her laugh at silly things, did spontaneous crazy acts at all times, and was just a ton of fun to be with. They got married, and suddenly, those crazy "funny" things became immature and annoying. She got to choose how she reacted to his traits.

Today, in honour of my best friends 33 birthday, I give to you 33 wonderfully amazing attributes about the love of my life.

1. You love God with your whole being. Thank you.

2. You are a tremendous, loving, giving, faithful husband.

3. You love our children deeply.

4. You have a great sense of humour. You continue to make me laugh 18 years later.

5. You are focused. If you set a goal, there is little anyone can do to stop you.

6. You strive to do your best with all aspects of the goal you have set. At times it irritates me how much work you put into work, but then realize you are doing your absolute best, and I love that.

7. You are passionate. Very passionate.

8. You are levelheaded. Comes with your job, BUT you carry it very well.

9. You are smart. You remember the strangest facts. I look forward to you helping with geography, science and history homework.

10. You are spontaneous. Love it. (hate it. lol)

11. You love with all you are. Not many, but those you do, get everything you have.

12. You care.

13. You have immense self-love. That's good. It gets you places. God loves that you love what he made.

14. You are calm in hectic situations. That makes us feel secure.

15. You are faithful. You understand what you have is not worth throwing away for short, small gain. (which is easily accessible in your line of work)

28. You are generous to me. You go overboard at Christmas. You like to see me smile.

I haven't been neglecting you.

Okay, well, maybe I have.

But all for good reason.

Don't be offended. Here's proof.

1)My hubby went away on course for 8 days. Three kids, an out-of-home-job, and multiple extra-curricular activities. Enough said?

2) I had to tend to a bat, a bunny, and a zombie bride. Not as easy as it sounds! That bunny gets C-RAAA-NKY!!

3)"MY" computer has decided to take a siesta for a while...so I'm dependant on the 'ole *gulp, sigh* desktop faithful.

4) Cranky bunny, brave bat and spunky princess got the flu.

So did I.

This is what my husband was greeted to when he arrived home. I'm nice like that. Gatorade and a barf bucket. True love!
Today, FINALLY!!! (after 9 days!) I am feeling almost myself. I can walk. I can breathe. I feel overwhemingly blessed.

But.. I have a LOOOOOOOOOOONG list to catch up.

In the meantime...HAPPY NOVEMBER..........HAPPY DECORATING.........HAPPY SNOW............HAPPY "MAKE THE MOST OF EVERY MOMENT". And..HAPPY.. well, I'll post that later.

It's been one of "those" weeks. Well, kind of.

You know what I mean?

"those" as in : 'It's hard to believe tomorrow is Friday.' and 'where in the world did the week go?'

While I worked 2 extra days outside of the home, my husband has lovingly watched over the kids and the house. He's vacuumed once, and finished a few loads of laundry. He's good to have around.

He didn't however, notice something was out of place in the cupboard. Maybe because he may have put it there?

It's there. Way up there in the middle, right hand side. Pink lid?!

Out of place, not because it's cotton candy. (we LOVE cotton candy)

(living with someone with OCD tendencies is very trying)

It's not hard to notice that winter will be upon us very soon. So soon, in fact, that we put up our Christmas lights tonight. Ahem, um, MIKE put up the Christmas lights. Sorry.

We (okay, MIKE) doesn't like to keep them up all year long, BUT he also doesn't want to fall off the roof after the first ice storm. Soo....he opts for mid October while it's just cold enough to'feel' it, but not cold enough to get frostbite.

Once I am past the fact that it won't be summer again for quite a few months (okay, will it ever be summer again????) , I'm resigned to the knowledge that autumn, in Canada, is a BEAUTIFUL time of year. (as I'm sure it is in other parts of the world as well.)

Not only does it look beautiful, but it smells beautiful as well.

What does beautiful smell like?

Crisp. Clean. Fresh. Spicy. Warm. Cozy. Colourful.

Can one actually smell all those things?

I think I can.

Hannah & I took a walk yesterday to collect some leaves for the house.

If you overlook the roads & the wreckers lot,

you will find that we live in a gorgeous neighbourhood.

It is Colourful. Fresh. Crisp. Spicy. Clean. Warm. Cozy.

It smells so good.

We are blessed by the beauty.

Of our neigbourhood.

And by those that surround us.

Pizza Soup

IF you like

meat (or pizza!!) try this.

YUM!

Ingredients: (feel free to substitute)

1 jar (14 oz) of pizza sauce

3 empty jars full of water

1 green bell pepper, seeded and chopped

1/2 red onion, chopped

1 cup baby tomatoes, cut in quarters (or 1 can diced tomatoes, drained--which is what I use)

I: "ummm.. I accidentally threw the remote at Hannah's head."

I: "Hey mama. Do you know what 'they' call testicles?"

Me: "ahh..what?"

I: (with his hands around his mouth) whispers, "NUTS!!!"

H: (doing share & show for school)

"Mama. Why do you think I always forget that part?"

Me: "because we sometimes don't pay attention, honey."

H: "Thanks mom. Thanks. "(quite serious with hands on her head)

Me: "huh? "

H: "thanks for that mom." (still very serious)

me: "thanks for what?"

H: "for saying that. I really needed to hear that."

H: (crying in her room)

Me: "oh honey, what's wrong?"

H: "why do I have to be so skinny? Nothing that I like fits me."

(IF ONLY EH???)

I: "Did dad work yesterday?"

Me: "He worked last night, yes."

I: "But did he work yesterday. Like that day before the other day that was tomorrow?"

Me: "Huh?"

I: "Mom, did you tell dad how much you spend?"

Me: "yes"

I: "Was he impressed?"

Me: (giggle) "No"

I: "Mad?"

Me: (heehee) "No. He knew we needed snowsuits honey."

I: "Oh. okay."

In the back seat of the car, playing with little people. Who are kissing each other.

A: "oh daddy, me wuv you, me wuv you, ME WUV YOU!!"

I: (who is getting very upset) "MOM! How do I get it to stop that?"

Me: "what to stop honey?"

I: "My penis. It keeps growing."

Me: (giggle, giggle)

H: (quite perturbed) "If you'd stop touching it, it would go back to normal you know???!!!"

If you haven't already realized it, I LOVE a good deal. I am always working on "a project". Usually, something old, cheap, ratty. I then try to revamp it, and work it into our home. It works like the 'thrill of a good find'. I almost feel like I'm being a better mom/wife by finding something and fixing it. I'm wierd like that.

A few Fridays ago I was driving to work and, low and behold, THIS beauty was sitting on a curb. Patiently awaiting the garbage man. Er, person.

SHOCKING!! I know!!

All it took was a knock on the door, and a heft into my hatchback. Oh yeah.

And I wasn't even late for work!

( I still don't know why the lady was looking at me like I had 3 eyeballs??)

Yesterday, I decided to deal with it. A coat of melamine paint (leftover from THIS project), some spray paint (special thanks to Mikey for the use of his camo spray!!) and some new hardware slides for the back of the drawers (they were broken...$4)

Not bad eh??

Ofcourse it's not perfect. And far from new. But it was free. And it will work!

Besides. Hannah LOVES it!

Oh. Our little angel was working on a project of her own. Imagine!

It worked!! All 12 bottles sealed. Salsa tastes yum-o!! Nachos last evening, quesadillas this evening...glorious!!

Next up..apple pie filling. Seeing as it IS apple season! Anyone ever tried to can that? (& have a good recipe????)

While the adults were enjoying nachos, the eldest was preparing for today. (supposed to be sleeping!) I think I've created a monster???!!

I am blessed beyond measure.

Truly.

One of these blessings is that I am alive and healthy.

My own personal conviction is to try the best I can, with what I have (and whom!), to keep myself (& us) that way.

Which, for our family, means healthy eating, among other things.

My dear friend Holly posted a recipe for salsa a while back. I have always wanted to try canning. Loving the natural/healthiness of the process, yet a tad unsure if I was actually capable of doing it.

Yesterday, I overcame that fear and, started chopping a gigantic pot of fresh, healthy, wholesome, YUMMY! goodness.

**okay, so when I said healthy, I meant healthy PLUS a bit of diet coke.**

okay, minus the paste and 2TBSP of sugar..shh..don't tell!!

I knew that IF I was to try canning, I HAD TO figure a way to keep the kitchen clean. Which, for me, means doing the dishes AS I go. As well as putting away 'extra' ingredients while I cook. I simply can not leave it all to the end. I'm weird that way.

One of my very favourite parts of blogging (ie:internet) is the never-ending selection of recipes available. I love clicking away to different 'sites' in search of something new, something quick, something healthy. I have a multitude of 'favourites' on my list, and quite often, make time to visit them.

Don't worry. This blog is not going to become one of "them".

I can't really cook. I just like too. Besides, I have 5 mouths to feed. Well, I don't have 5 mouths myself, but, oh, you know what I'm saying.

Anyways, I thought I'd try my hand at a "What's for dinner?" post.

And, NO, I will not promise it will be available every week.

You'll take what I give you, you hear?

(unless you really want me to post my kraft dinner recipe?!)

On tonights menu was::::

Quick and Easy Beef Burrito Skillet

Brown 1 lb lean ground beef. Drain.

Add 1C salsa. (mmm..salsa)

1 can (drained) kidney beans. (okay, so I was out of kidney beans, I improvised with chick peas)

1 package taco seasoning

1C water

Bring to boil.

Let simmer on medium 5 mins.

Add 1C cheeze. (mmmm...cheeze)

4 multi grain tortillas (cut into 1" squares)

Stir.

Cover & let stand about 5 mins. ( must. melt. cheeze mmmmmmm)

Add sour cream & onions.

ENJOY!!!

I know you have all been waiting for it.

I've mentioned it a few times, and you have been sitting on pins and needles wondering 'WHEN IS SHE GOING TO POST THOSE PICTURES OF THE NEW BEDROOM.'

Sorry to keep you all in suspense.

This bedroom was originally Isaiahs. His bedroom was to be built after Hannahs was. (in unfinished basement) In the meantime, while Hannah slept in mommy & daddy's room, Isaiah had this very bland, undecorated room.

Skip ahead three years.

We now have an 'almost' complete basement (bathroom remaining) with both Hannah & Isaiah's bedrooms.

Aliah has taken over the bedroom Isaiah WAS in. Still undecorated. (I often laugh at the big rush to decorate the first childs' room, and the fact that the poor third child is lucky to have a crib to sleep in!! HA!)

Yes, that IS builders beige. Nice.

We added some colour.

Replaced the crib.

Added some curtains.

A picture.

A bookcase.

And our beloved dresser.

While working on the list last night, I was listening to Dr.James McDonald. He said something that resonated in me. If you are struggling with raising young children (or just raising young children) take this definition to heart. And then stay focused. Give consequences. And ALWAYS follow through.

It's tough. I know.

Parental Training is: Artificial application and amplification of the consequences of wrong choices before the actions are big enough to scar their life.

The List

Remember the list? The things I wanted to get done this summer? Or at least try to get done?

I put it away for a week. On purpose. I had more than enough on my plate, and didn't want to feel pressured by 'unnecessary' deadlines.

But that week is over.

So, out comes the list.

But that's not my point.

I've had numerous people ask me if "I get tired" , "where do I get my energy", "do I ever rest?"

Oh yes.

I certainly do.

I also watch little t.v. and have a husband who works shift work.

That accounts for much.

Take tonight.

You may be watching a movie with your hubby. Or playing games with the family. Calling it a night after bubbling in the bath and some cuddle time. Out shopping with friends.

I, on the other hand, ( while my husband patiently waits for the clock to turn 6am so he can finish his shift, come home and go to bed. At which point you or I may be getting up??) tuck my kiddies into bed, and welcome the silence. They need their rest. It helps them grow.

I now have 3-4 pure, uninterrupted, silent, glorious hours to fill.

And, with t.v. out of the picture, most often I set myself to work.

And I love it.

Not only because of what I get accomplished, but also because I usually take that time to listen to music, or podcasts.

So while I work, I grow. So to speak.

I learn, and get filled, and decompress, and sing, and wonder, and smile, and vent, and live, and soak, and recognize, and cry, and bathe, and ponder, and love and breathe.

and rest.

and grow.

I really must go now. I have this list thing. So much work to get done. Plus, I need to get some rest.

As the list grows, summer continues, bedtimes are sketchy, children are filthy, mornings are lazy, computer time is nil, house stays dirty, the sun hides behind the clouds..and time marches on.

I have been trying for 3 nights now to upload some more pictures, but have failed all 3 nights. I will continue to try. Just for you.

My baby turned 2 at the beginning of the month, and as her 'present' we "re-did" her room. Which means, the crib and soother went "bye-bye" replaced with a 'big-girl bed' (hence the photos I have been TRYING to upload)

To say that we've been busy is not entirely accurate.

We've actually been enjoying a rather 'slow' month. Mike has been blessed with the month off (minus 6 working days), and, of course, the kids are free from school.

So other than the 'normal' everyday (laundry, cooking, cleaning, shopping), sports for the kids, church and working for me, it's been quite relaxing.

We've taken in the beach, the airshow, the swimming pool. Watched a fair amount of movies, slept in, lounged around....

You get the idea, no?

Never one for 'taking it easy' though, I've made quite a long list of "things to do while it's summer, or heck, just because I want them done" for myself.

I'm slowly working away at the list.

AND I'm quite enjoying it.

Here is the first thing crossed off of my list.

Complete. CHECK!

An old dresser I found for $20 @ the used store. Plans on 'stripping it' and 'painting it' for the re-do of the 'babies' room.

It took a lot longer than I was anticipating, BUT, I really like how it turned out.

For those of you who know me IRL, you know that I 'prefer' shorter hair. It's not that I don't like long hair, I just don't hold it in high regard. It may have something to do with my mother. I'm not sure. Just saying. (sorry mom. HAD to put that in!!)

I have never wanted my daughters' hair to be long. (once again, personal preference). In fact, I cut both girls short until they start to ask for longer hair. Then I abide, as long as there is no hair in the eyes. ( oh no! I AM my mother.) I also encourage selecting whatever 'style' of hair is wanted. -which often results in one braid, and one pigtail. Or something of the sort.

My friend Karen, whose 4yr old daughter has GORGEOUS LONG hair!!, had a 'situation'. Kira decided to shorn some locks. Albeit disheartening for Karen (who, I think, has never cut Kiras hair), I have to admit I chuckled at the 'small' (to me) amount of hair that was lost. (sorry Karen--still friends??)

Our young marrieds group took a trip to Canada's Wonderland SANS children!! Other than a whole lot of motion sickness, it was a GREAT trip!!! Good times had by all--with a bit of funnel cake and cotton candy to boot!!

My dearest Hannah,

Today is your 7th birthday. I can hardly believe it. You are growing up so fast. It seems like just yesterday I told you that you were getting so big, and to slow down a little. Oh wait. It WAS yesterday.

It's not that I don't want you to get 'big'. I know that you will.

It's just that I am so enjoying who you are right now, that I can wait for you to grow.

Since the day you were born, you have brought JOY into our world. Your enthusiasm for life is contagious, and you daily remind me to find that JOY in the little things. You have an intense amount of your fathers passion inside of you. I love that.

One of my favourite things about you is that you are your own person. Although you like current fads, and appreciate others approval, you consistently make up your own mind and ideas. At times, there may be some who would be embarrassed to go 'in public' with what you had chosen to wear, but I simply LOVE IT! Knowing you feel confident in who you are is rewarding to me. I pray you always feel this assurance in who GOD has made you.

You show genuine care with your siblings, and will often do without if it means that they will benefit. You are a 'little mother' -- if only I had $1 for every time I have had to say "I am their mother Hannah, not you". You are tender and compassionate. You love with everything you have.

You are fiercely independant. A tad stubborn. You get that honestly. You seem wise beyond your years some days. An 'old soul' grandma says. You live with respect, and hate to see anyone breaking the "rules". Just remember that we have no control over what others do. And always remember that, ultimately, God is in control.

We waited so long for you, your father and I. We are so so glad you are here.

Our love for you is immeasurable. We love you deeply.

One of my favourite things to do is read. I love it. As far back as I can remember, I've loved reading. Possibly because I lived in the country, with no playmates that lived close by. We had to "make our own fun", and "back then" (HA!!) there was not near the amount of 'entertainment' (if that's what you want to call it) as we have now. (seriously! people. How many ps2/xbox/wii systems does one need??)

Okay. So I'm 'killing' myself here.

I'm thinking of a long post about 'you know you're getting old when'.

Back to the reading.

I spent most of my teenage years with my nose in a book. More so romance fiction than anything else. I love a "good 'ole" Amish read. Reading is an escape for me. A hideaway into someone elses' life and experiences.

Now, I don't allow myself near as much time as I would like.

Mainly because there are so many 'other' things that need to be accomplished, and partly because I'm a very impatient reader. Once I start, I DO NOT want to quit. Pacing a book has never been a good quality of mine. And with 3 children, a husband, an outside-of-the-home job, and a home to look after.

Well, you get the point?

I do, however, spend a small amount of each day reading.

I treated my 6yr old to the new 'Hannah Montana' movie for having a great report card.

I was made to squeeeeeze into my 11yr old, next door neighbours, t-shirt.

(ummm..mom? How are you going to get that off?)

While wearing said t-shirt we had the paparazzi taking numerous pictures.

We had a blast.

And then we came home to repeated lessons to learn the "hoedown throwdown".

I've tried to write this post numerous times. It has been difficult as I find I never get my point across. Quite often I finish and I wonder did I pen my heart well enough?

My heart is "GRACE".

Freely given, unmerited, manifestation of favour.

There. That's my point.

Now here's the blog.

For as long as I've known him, my husband has been misunderstood. Or so that's the way I see it. I love him. My vision may be clouded.

So many times I have heard the words 'moody', 'quiet', 'selfish', 'cocky', 'bi-polar', 'egotistical' to describe him. Mostly from those that don't really know him. (and not many do). I have heard "He never says hi to me" or "What's wrong with him" or "Didn't take his pills today?" or "Is he happy or grumpy today?"

They are always wondering why 'he is the way he is'.

Sometimes, I would like to rhyme off a list of his wonderful qualities to them.

Like: how he is FULL of 'passion' and 'loyalty'. How he is 'goal-orientated' and gives everything he has AND MORE when he commits. How he is full of 'patience' and ALWAYS says he's sorry first. Even when he's right. I would love to ask them how they can't see any of that instead. Because, to me, it is so evident.

Just look at the way he treats me.

Most often though, I would love to share with them a small glimpse of our lives.

Like inside, everyday glimpses.

For those of you who don't know, my husband works for our city's police force. He works in a unit called ERT (emergency response team--SWAT for those in the USA) as the sniper.

He's so cute eh??

Our city isn't huge. (current guesstimate @ 60 000) Which means there isn't enough crime for a full-time team. So, he works on the road, as well as acting sargeant.

BUT

THERE IS STILL CRIME.

And until one is faced with the crime AND situations that he deals with daily, then one will never know why he 'is the way he is'.

I couldn't even start to describe the "stuff". Seriously, there are days I don't ask because it makes me physically sick. I will see him sitting quietly on the couch after he's woke up, and my breath gets caught in my throat as I wonder what he may have seen last shift.

Did he see a child that had been sexually assaulted. Or a mother and wife who was beat up. Had someone attempted, or succeeded in taking their own life? How many drunks did he arrest? Did they call him names? Or spit on him? Did he have tears in his eyes like I have in mine?

Take tonight for instance.

It's 11:00 p.m.

Most of you are sleeping--or at least heading that way.

Not him.

He's on his way to work. In a large city not our own. He will be dealing with some very dangerous people, that have very dangerous weapons. He will be knocking down doors, pulling out guns, yelling really loud. His adrenaline will be pulsing. He will for sure be sweating. He may see small children caught in the middle. There may be blood. He will be called names. Bad ones. He may get punched, spit on, kicked. Or worse.

God willing, he will make his way back home sometime tomorrow. He'll try to catch a few zzzzz's. He will get up, kiss his wife, hug his children. He'll barbeque chicken. Go rollerblading with the kids. Help his daughter deliver papers.

He may talk.

He might not.

He might smile.

He might not.

Whatever.

You see, the best part about grace is that WE DON'T DESERVE IT! I could list a million things on here to make you understand my husband--but you never will! God designed him unique. As he did you and I. My husband may never be the man YOU want him to be. He may never handle things the way I might. He will NEVER see, or hear, or feel enough to deserve grace.

But he will ALWAYS get it. From God. And me.

That's the point.

Undeserved, unmerited, freely given.

You may not even know my husband personally. I'm not specifically asking you to extend grace to HIM. I am relaying a portion of our lives that is so often misunderstood. And in that, I hope you may realize that there are people in YOUR lives that are misunderstood as well. We all have a story.

The cashier at the grocery store. The person who delivers your mail. Who teaches your child. Who cleans your teeth.

None of us deserve grace.

We all can extend it.

I'm still 'allowed' in my kids rooms. They're too young to fully understand 'privacy' and 'rights'. Thankfully.

'Cause I'm just not sure how I'm going to 'deal' with all that.

Besides. It's cool if mom is in their rooms right now. It means she's either playing or cleaning, and doing both of those alone, often sucks.

So, for now, I enter.

We just weren't blessed with 'luscious locks'. (both my girls have two crowns!! ugh!) I'm not bitter. It is what it is. We got the big blue eyes. And we did GET hair. Just not the hair that we would have asked for. That's more than we can say for the man of the house. I'm not going to kick up a stink and ask why we didn't get both-the eyes and the hair. We just didn't.

Which is probably why I LOVE a haircut. When you have less than desired of anything, it is wonderful to have a professional deal with it. Right? That, and my mother's views on hair. She has this thing. We won't go there.

Feeling overly shaggy, this weekend we set out to get some hair cuts:

Baby girl was NOT impressed that mommy had scissors anywhere near her ears. She has no idea what 'bad hair' is. She doesn't care. She does care about her ears though. (And, for the record, so do I.)

One of our very favourite "activities" at our home, is to put on a movie or CD and then SING and DANCE along with it. We can waste away hours like this. You should see us! (My) Hannah can sing a mean 'Hannah Montana'. And dance?? Sharpay Evans has nothing on me! (High School Musical for those without a 7 year old girl living under your roof). We have even persuaded the macho, manly 4 year old to join in with us....

This evening, after bath and in our pj's, we put on a little music and sang the night away. Hannah was in her glory singing to the camera, AFTER we did our necessary: "INTRODUCING....HANNAHHHH MONNNNNTANAAAA!!!!!!"

This secretly placed item almost went unnoticed while I was getting ready for work.. I'm not that awake at 6:00am. I chuckled when I noticed it. Then I wanted to jump back into bed and cuddle with my beauties while they slept. There's just something about being a kid that makes soccer balls in mom and dad's bathroom funny. I love the humour, the imagination, the innocence. For all the "ahh, this is NOT where soccer balls belong now, right?" I absolutely know I will miss these days soon enough.

I don't think I've ever blogged about my mom. Not for lack of reasons--I have a very wonderful mother. I have many stories of, and much gratitude for, my mother. But mom is a bit shy. She does NOT like the lime light, nor does she appreciate any talk about her. She might be "mad" at me..but can't let this one go!

Sewing has always interested me. I've never really mentioned anything, but I've always held a keenness to the thought and option of creating my own projects. Many times I have wanted to buy a machine, but I never did. It's not that I couldn't save the money. I could. But there are so many "other things" that are "more important". Bills, stuff for the house, things for the kids--you know?! I just never wanted to spend money frivolously on something I didn't even know how to do. What if I don't even like it? And what about the pain in my hands? What if I couldn't physically do it?

Excuses.

I guess I just never felt worth it.

My Heavenly Father, and my mother (& father) thought differently.

You see, God knows the desires of our hearts--and he told mom one of mine.

And she listened.

And now I have a brand new sewing machine.

It's not my birthday. I have never asked, nor have I told anyone this desire. My mom just listened and acted. (she was a bit concerned when she gave it to me, wondering if I was going to be like "huh? why do I want THAT?")

Reality is she could have said to God (and she may have at first!!) "a sewing machine? I don't think so! Do you know how much they are? Her husband has a good job--if she wants one she can buy her own! Don't think I'm buying her one"

But she didn't.

That's the way my mom is. She loves her family. Loves God. She is quiet, thoughtful, stubborn, and committed. She is faithful and loving. She wants the best for those around her, and would give all she had to see them prosper. She lives and breathes her family and friends. She is a wonderful mother. One to strive to be like.

She has always loved me for ME. And that means more than I can ever explain or express.

Knowing you are loved, no matter what, is indescribable.

I'll be entering into my 7th year of being a mom soon. (May) Somedays it feels like it started 'just yesterday', other days it feels like an eternity.

I consider myself to be a pretty decent mom. Sure, I have my bad days, bad habits, 'demon faces'(come on you know the face I'm talking about!). But I have good days too. And I try really hard. Most times. There are things that (I think) I am really good at. Other things, well, I stink at. But it's a work in progress right? It IS the hardest job I've ever had--or ever will have!

Case in point:

98% of the time we have cereal for breakfast. It's quick, easy, and my kids like it. We have a variety like cheerios, special K, corn flakes, raisin bran. ( For a special treat (like never) I will buy fruitloops, or lucky charms.) I am introducing oatmeal in the very near future. So, fairly healthy on the scale, but not the healthiest. I am VERY aware of our health and food consumption, yet I also need to be wary of our time and money. Cereal seems to be it, for us, right now.

One of the "good" things I do, is put a special 'treat' into their cereal every day::

And they LOVE me for it. Actually, they don't even know it's in there anymore. And some days, Hannah asks for just a bowl of AllBran by itself.

I've covered dairy and fibre in the a.m.

Check.

Soon, when I introduce the oatmeal, I plan on incorporating this into it. I use it in pretty much everything I cook. Throw in a tablespoon or two. Just another one of the "good" mothering skills I have.

Obviously, with all my health concerns taking up space in my brain, I have forgotten some very important child-rearing lessons.

Like manners.

Seriously people, PLEASE tell me how my child of 18months learned this???!!

My husband insists this is necessary to get all the milk and fibre from the bottom of the bowl.

I've been told the "story" a few times. I don't remember all of the details, but I can piece together some of the facts, and the rest, well, those are just what I've taken away for my own personal memories.

Doctors once told my mom she was unable to have children. Actually, they told my parents that. I'm not sure if it was directed towards my mom, or my dad, but now, after having my own "experience", I'm certain it was my mom. I'll have to ask. Either way, after 5 years of trying, and professional advice, they had to seriously consider their options-even if my mother felt she was going to carry a child.

Late September 1972, my mother was sent to the hospital. She had been on a ridiculous, all-celery diet (don't ask!) which must have made her delusional, or, in the least, a bit light-headed, because she fell asleep under a sunlamp (now known as tanning beds). She suffered serious degree burns.

While at the hospital, she was informed that she was pregnant.

Huh?

And the baby was to be born early March.

Huh?

I'm sure my mother was bewildered. {Was this possible? But they had said..oh I always knew...but we've been trying for so long...I wondered why I was gaining weight and only eating celery...no, this can't be right..but..oh my..could it be?...our very own..doctor? are you serious????....}

A mere FOUR (and a bit) months later (FEBRUARY 7th, 1973.)

Dreams...

It's not news that I love to organize. Nor that I love to purge. It has a bit to do with the control freak/perfectionist that lives somewhere deep inside me, that I haven't quite tamed. I like straight lines, uniform, sameness. I don't mind this gene. I quite like it actually. If I can keep it under-wraps and not let it take over my whole being and control ME. (which, I might add, is a daily decision). The only "problem" with my love-of-everything-in-its-place is that I lose out on my creativity, my sense of colour, of uniqueness. Slowly, I am trying to merge them both together.

Dreaming isn't easy for a control freak. Or at least for THIS control freak. There are to many things to do now, too much to see and take care of now, too much to understand, organize, discard, make perfect, NOW. There is no time to look to the future, no time to sit and ponder the what-may-be's nor the I-sure-would-likes.
I have no idea what my future holds (which is scary to a someone "like me") and thinking about it seems futile if it can't be altered, cleaned, dusted, and neatly wrapped in a big box with a cute pink bow and some shiny wrap. But, as I learn and grow, I am aware that it has to be done, and it's actually a good thing!--dreaming that is! So the fact that I have put a few moments into my dreams and my future -what I would like- (rather than what has to be done, or what the people around me would like) is a feat for me.

Now, to actually admit it.

I would love to help people organize and purge. Actually, I would love to get paid money to organize/purge. (like my job, or a business) Seriously. I have no idea what or how I would do it, but if we're talking dreams, here's mine. Silly you think? Maybe for you. But not for me.

Well, last night I got a brief moment to awaken in my dream. Sort of. I didn't get paid, with money, but I did benefit, and I felt good after it was over. I was asked by my neighbour for a little help in her kitchen, and 5 hours later, we had 3 contractor garbage bags and 3 large boxes full of "stuff". By the time we were through, we had 3 empty cupboards. Oops. A little too much purging? She was scared to ask me. No, embarrassed to ask. But her husband made her, and she's so happy now. I had a great time, AND I got some loot!!!
I was paid with 9 beautiful glasses (bottom right). A wonderful "thankyou" as I previously had only 4!

And with this gorgeous bowl.
I'm not sure what I'm going to use it for. (*gasp* and she's keeping it???) But I LOVE it, and will put it to good use.

Promise.

The second week of January has arrived.
Already.
I'm certain that my head may spin off this week.
Possibly. (or..maybe not?)
I'm making myself dizzy with the run around. I'm sure you all know the drill? School, work, activities, church, bills, cleaning, laundry, homework, groceries, etcc........
Since Mike and I work totally opposite shifts (in order to not have daycare) we sacrifice alot of our time. Our time together, and the time for each of us to be alone. I'm not complaining--it's a choice we've made for now. (albeit a difficult one.)
I've worked 24 hours this weekend, and have 16 more to go (Monday & Tuesday). On Wednesday I'm going to see Tammy for some nail care as well as getting my hair cut while Mike takes Hannah skating with the school. Then Mike goes to work for two shifts, the kids will have school, we have cell, band practice, skating lessons, Aliah has a doctors appointment, those dang papers, and I have a list a mile long.

But once that list is crossed off. And Mike is done work. And the appointments and practices are over. (atleast for this week).

We will STOP. And RELAX. And enjoy TIME. To do NOTHING.

A Mom's Letter To Dear Santa,

I've been a good mom all year. I've fed, cleaned and cuddled my children on demand, visited the doctor's office more than my doctor, sold sixty-two cases of candy bars to raise money to plant a shade tree on the school playground. I was hoping you could spread my list out over several Christmases, since I had to write this letter with my son's red crayon, on the back of a receipt in the laundry room between cycles, and who knows when I'll find anymore free time in the next 18 years.

Here are my Christmas wishes:

I'd like a pair of legs that don't ache (in any color, except purple, which I already have) and arms that don't hurt or flap in the breeze; but are strong enough to pull my screaming child out of the candy aisle in the grocery store.

I'd also like a waist, since I lost mine somewhere in the seventh month of my last pregnancy. If you're hauling big ticket items this year.

I'd like fingerprint resistant windows and a radio that only plays adult music; a television that doesn't broadcast any programs containing talking animals; and a refrigerator with a secret compartment behind the crisper where I can hide to talk on the phone.

On the practical side, I could use a talking doll that says, "Yes, Mommy" to boost my parental confidence, along with two kids who don't fight and three pairs of jeans that will zip all the way up without the use of power tools.

I could also use a recording of Tibetan monks chanting "Don't eat in the living room" and "Take your hands off your sister," because my voice seems to be just out of my children's hearing range and can only be heard by the dog.

If it's too late to find any of these products, I'd settle for enough time to brush my teeth and comb my hair in the same morning, or the luxury of eating food warmer than room temperature without it being served in a Styrofoam container.

If you don't mind, I could also use a few Christmas miracles to brighten the holiday season. Would it be too much trouble to declare ketchup a vegetable? It will clear my conscience immensely.

It would be helpful if you could coerce my children to help around the house without demanding payment as if they were the bosses of an organized crime family.

Well, Santa, the buzzer on the dryer is ringing and my son saw my feet under the laundry room door. I think he wants his crayon back.

Have a safe trip and remember to leave your wet boots by the door and come in and dry off so you don't catch cold. Help yourself to cookies on the table but don't eat too many or leave crumbs on the carpet.

Finding JOY!

It's been quite the journey the last weeks/months. A journey of sadness and pain, upheaval and emotion. A journey we wouldn't have asked for or chosen, but one that was allowed upon us, only to the amount we could handle.
The sadness itself has been more real than I've ever experienced. Not really because any of these situations hit directly to home, but mainly because my husband wallows through the trenches of the pain and sadness daily. He tries not to 'bring it home' with him, but sometimes he has no choice.(this is a later post).
Oh, it may be more than some could handle, and definitely not even close to what you may have gone through, but for us, it was enough. I clearly remember talking to God one evening, and asking if he could just say "ENOUGH".

My lack of posts was a reaction to this "stuff", it's hard to write honestly when you feel sad. Why make others sad? Which is mainly why I would post pics or stories of the babe, because she brings me daily joy. (As they all do.)
God remains faithful to show me the humour around me.

Case in point: (please bear with me, I hope it reads as funny as it was. I will try my best to explain)

Yesterday, when I arrived at work, a co-worker informed me I was to be on my best behaviour. No singing, no dancing around the store, no fun. There was to be a "head honcho" from head office coming to inspect the store/staff. It was meant as a joke, but we all were well behaved. The man came and stayed for a large chunk of the day.

Now, let me explain that I was the cashier. The regular girl had asked for the day off ,and since I will help out whenever I can, I said I would go on cash. This time of year, we aren't very busy, so they day can become quite boring if you are on cash. I bide my time with some paperwork I bring up, but since you are mainly alone, one can tend to daydream.
Because the 'man' was gone, I felt free to be myself again. At which point, I became dangerous.

I had finished with a customer, thanking him and watching him leave, when I believed I was all alone, and the store was empty of customers.
I began perusing my papers, feeling the beat to the radio, tapping my foot, swaying my body, mouthing the lyrics.

I guess I liked the song, because at one point I bellowed (yes! Bellowed)
"WHAT"YA GONNA DOOOOOOOOO!!" using full vibrado, while tipping my body backwards, playing my imaginary guitar, strumming like rock star!

In a split second, I looked around, to find an old man (whom I did not know was standing there) STARING at me with a reply of
"WHAT THE HELL WAS THAT??" (exactly what he said!)

I did not know how to respond.

I simply started laughing, and did not stop for atleast 5 minutes. Deep-down-belly-jigglin-eyes-full-of-tears-please-help-me-catch-my-breath laughing.

God is so good.

I don't watch t.v. that often. Oh, depending on the day, the week, the time of year, you might catch the t.v. on while I'm in the house, or you may see me skimming through the channels, but very rarely do I actually SIT DOWN and watch.

Except for Wednesday nights.

That's tonight.

In one minute, I will sit on the floor, pull up 2 laundry hampers,(to fold the ever present laundry of course!!) and enjoy one full hour of the very best t.v. show ever.

Can anyone guess what it might be?????
